New Tower Bridge Education Pack
Published: 28 July 2010
Here at Tower Bridge Exhibition we think learning should be fun
so working together in partnership with the Guy Fox History Project
we have produced a new and exciting
Education Pack. Designed for Key Stage 2 pupils and teachers
the
Education Pack combines some of the most fascinating aspects of
Tower Bridge with key national curriculum subjects including
English, History, Geography, Citizenship, Science and Mathematics
to name but a few. The
Education Pack comes complete with activities to undertake
before, during and after a school visit.
The first section provides teachers with all the vital
information required to plan a visit. This includes opening
hours, our groups booking number, costs and most importantly how to
get to Tower Bridge be it by train, coach or a gentle cruise down
the Thames. We have even included a risk assessment template should
teachers wish to undertake a pre trip site visit.
When visiting Tower Bridge Exhibition we recommend allowing at
least 90 minutes for the visit. Arriving at the North West
Tower pupils will be transported by lift 42 meters above the River
Thames, taking them up to the high level Walkways which were first
crossed by the public back in 1894. In each Tower a short
video explains the history behind the Bridge’s conception and
construction whilst the two Walkways offer amazing panoramic views
around London. Complete with animations Guy Fox History
Project has designed a pupil’s worksheet which can be used during
the visit to make their experience more fun. With all the
answers hidden within the exhibition panels in the Walkways pupils
can fill in the missing words on their ‘My Visit to Tower Bridge
Exhibition’ worksheet.
Having exited via a lift in the South Tower, pupils should
follow the blue line to the Victorian Engine Rooms situated
underneath the Bridge on the south bank. On arrival to the
Engine Rooms they can then embark on a treasure hunt finding
and naming all of the key pieces of machinery that were once used
to raise the bascules of Tower Bridge. Here they will learn all
about the original workings of the Bridge whilst marvelling at the
magnificent coal boilers and steam engines that have been
meticulously maintained.
The fun and learning continue back in the class room with a
whole range of activities which are specially designed to
complement the national curriculum. Using the experience of their
visit pupils can be set Mathematic questions based on the height,
length and weight of Tower Bridge with all the answers provided to
cause teachers minimal preparation time. History, Geography and
Citizenship can be studied by comparing Tower Bridge in 1894 to
that of today looking at changes in landscape, population and
employment. Whilst a whole host of creative activities allow both
Art and Design and Design and Technology curriculum links to be
covered.
The
Education Pack is free to download and makes the ideal
accompaniment to a School Visit. We ask that any school group
pre books their visit with our dedicated group bookings coordinator
who can also explain about the special offers we have for school
groups studying the national curriculum.
